Description
Product description for Ampeleia Ampeleia IGT 2019 (bio)
Ampeleia is the top wine and namesake of the winery in the Maremma. Cabernet Franc is the distinctive grape variety, which, according to Ampeleia, delivers unique qualities in southern Tuscany: Roccatederighi and Cabernet Franc form a rare synergy, from which the winery was born in 2002. The cuvée, once made up of six grape varieties, is now limited solely to Cabernet Franc. The vineyards for Ampeleia are spread around the winery, planted on clay-limestone soils and located at various altitudes. After being hand-harvested, the grapes, with 15% whole bunches, ferment spontaneously before the wines age for a further 12 months in wooden vats.
Colour
Dark purple with a black core and violet reflections.
Nose
The 2019 Ampeleia from Società Agricola Ampeleia presents itself generously on the nose with an expansive, hedonistic character. The fundamental black heart cherry and the dark mulberry form the fruity foundation, framed by fine wood spice, sandalwood, and vetiver. Aromas of dark spices such as black pepper, allspice and thyme, black cardamom, and wild service tree build a bridge back to the fruit. Despite its open-hearted nature, the Ampeleia, in its youth, invariably and unmistakably demands a carafe.
Palate
The youthful tannins are fleshy and firm, so that you feel like you can chew it. Invigoratingly tart, they aromatically tip into sweetness and form a bridge to the dark fruit, which also appears youthful and thus comparatively disciplined. The fruitiness of the nose is also reflected on the palate, framed by stimulating tannins. This gives it its rapid drinking appeal, a quality that distinguishes good wines regardless of their prestige: flow! An ethereally cool, long finish.

Made with Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Ampeleia gives us a unique view onto a grape variety that we are seeing with increasingly successful results along the coast of Tuscany. In this case, you get punchy (macerated) fruit flavors of candied blueberry and cherry and lots of vertical lift from a producer who always offers interesting winemaking interpretations in wines from Tuscany and in the far north of Italy under the Elisabetta Foradori brand. The wine winds down slowly with lingering notes of cigar ash, smoke and tar.

The 2019 Ampeleia (Cabernet Franc) is deep, flashy and super-expressive. In 2019, Ampeleia seems to offer a bit more volume and brooding intensity than in most years. Black cherry, mocha, dried herbs and espresso lend notable sepia-toned intensity throughout. This potent Franc is a winner. I suggest giving the 2019, and all these wines, frankly, a bit of aeration, as oxygen is so beneficial.
