Description

Product description for Albert Mann Riesling Furstentum Grand Cru 2022 (bio)

Domaine Albert Mann is the merger of two great winemaking families: the Mann family, who have been growing wine since the early 17th century, and the Barthelmé family, the current owners, who have been active in winemaking since 1654. Located in Wettolsheim on the Alsace Wine Route, each plot of the 25-hectare estate is individually cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles. The Principality lies only 400 meters as the crow flies from the Schlossberg, but is the coldest of the Grand Cru sites: while the ice on the Schlossberg is already melting, it takes a good ten days longer in the Principality, a lead that lasts throughout the entire year. Located in the municipality of Kientzheim, the vines there grow on calcareous soils, and the vines are around 30 years old.

Colour

Intense straw yellow with bright highlights.

Nose

The 2022 Furstentum Riesling Grand Cru from Albert Mann presents a cosmopolitan appearance in the glass: alongside citrus notes such as orange and linden blossoms and green mandarin, aromas of quince, medlar, and pickled ginger emerge. A hint of sourdough crust and cereal notes, as well as a touch of green tea, draw the lips expectantly to the glass.

Palate

On the palate, it is extremely disciplined, with powdery, fine phenolics providing an invigoratingly tart grip on the palate and a rather cool nature. Characterized by the ripe, yet broad acidity, the slightly earthy minerality also has an accelerating and refreshing effect. The fruit is inextricably linked to the tart notes, giving it its stimulating bite and long finish.

Wine Advocate

Score: 96+

The 2022 Alsace Grand Cru Furstentum Riesling is very deep, intense and rich on the aromatic nose that shows the limestone soils intertwined with bitter orange or cumquat and pink grapefruit aromas. Full-bodied, rich and intense on the palate, this is a big, dense and generous but elegant and almost Gewürztraminer-like Riesling with texture, concentration, muscles and power as well as huge aging potential. This is definitely more of a Furstentum than a Riesling, and it will need many years to refine and become Riesling. And even that doesn’t happen, you will still have the Furstentum. 14% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.
