On the palate, this is a juicy wine with polished tannins, with a few green notes typical of the vintage, but not overpowering. After eleven years of aging, there is still an impressive amount of youthful tannin. The fruit is reminiscent of raspberries, cherries, and blackberries, combined with a hint of tomato and bell pepper. <\/p>\n

Wine Information<\/h5>\n

Les Varennes du Grand Clos is a vineyard located between the left bank of the Vienne and the Clos de la Dioterie. The fairly flat vineyard is partly sandy-loamy, partly sandy-gravelly over limestone. Some of the vines were newly planted between 1962 and 1976, but some are 40 years older. The Cabernet Franc from Les Varennes du Grand Clos undergoes a cool pre-fermentation for ten days at 10\u00b0C. The maceration in wooden vats lasts around four weeks at temperatures not exceeding 21\u00b0C. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the free-run wines and the best press wines are blended for malolactic fermentation. The French oak barrels are partially replaced every year, so that around a fifth of the barrels are new and one to four years old. The vintages then mature in wood for 15 to 16 months, a further six months in tanks for harmonization, and are then bottled. <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

Les Varennes du Grand Clos appears elegant with plenty of dark, yet fresh and juicy fruit. There are also fresh leaves and a touch of pyrazine, a hint of ink and licorice, and crushed lime. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

On the palate, the Chinon presents a lively, vibrantly fresh acidity with tannins that still seem very young, but are already melting away in contrast to the 2019 vintage. The fruit is crisp and juicy, alternating between red and black berries with a hint of dark cherry. Everything is on the table and transparent. The Cabernet Franc possesses a great deal of power.<\/p>\n

The 2016 Chinon Les Varennes du Grand Clos shows precise, perfectly ripe and concentrated dark fruit, such as spicy blackcurrants, plus discreet oak aromas on the nose. The palate is pure and fresh and reveals fine tannins intertwined with a salty-mineral finish. This is a very promising Cabernet Franc with very nice juiciness.
