Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, the 2017 Le Mont Moelleux is already impressively complex. The 53 grams of sweetness are by no means intrusive; on the contrary, you wonder where the sweetness has been hidden, so clearly balanced is the 4.9 grams of acidity. The wine is extremely harmonious and precise. The acid structure and vital minerality are particularly inspiring, as are the fine notes of Indian spices, tart oranges, and stony components. In the long finish, the honey-like sweetness, paired with salted almonds, appears in a furious, long finish. What a harmonious wine and what potential! <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

The 1995 Le Mont Moelleux from Domaine Huet literally overwhelms you with its complex aromas that radiate from the bowl like a laser: The deep, yellow-fruity nose initially appears highly complex, almost bolide, until it finely parcels itself out like a kaleidoscope, constantly creating new patterns. The top note features delicate floral aromas of orange zest and acacia blossom, while the heart note features yellow fruits such as quince, fully ripe pears, and yellow dried fruit. The fruity, opulent aromas are complemented by subtly spicy, ethereal notes of rosemary, chervil, a touch of English celery, and a handful of curry leaves along with honeycomb and salted caramel. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

On the palate, the wine radiates minimalist freshness with an astonishingly slim stature. The opulence of the nose deepens with each sip, creating a powerful, minerally drink whose precisely defined contours relentlessly refill the glass. A delicate phenolic finish adds polish and contours the palate, while the ripe and incredibly long acidity ensures tension and immense length. The wine has a dramatic underlying vibration that is difficult to capture in words, but perfectly suited to a glass. An ethereally cool finish with a rich bass.<\/p>\n

The yellow-golden colored 1995 Vouvray le Mont Moelleux is super clear and piquant on the spicy\/peppery flavored nose with its perfectly ripe and elegant, perfectly balanced fruit. It has the same balance on the palate that exhibits the rich sweetness and the piquant and endlessly salty Le Mont terroir. Except for the Scharzhofberg and other Wiltingen terroirs with red slate, I don’t know of any terroir that absorbs the sweetness as much as the Mont. Add alcohol, richness and tannins, more charming stone fruits and autumn instead of spring, and you come closer to Chenin from Vouvray’s Le Mont terroir than to Riesling from the Saar’s greatest terroir. The elegance and balance as well as the vitality and tension are gorgeous here. The further aging potential should be 20, probably even more years. Mind you though, that I didn’t pull the best cork. It was black on the top side and really humid inside also on the down side.
