Olivier Humbrecht: In 1989, two years after acquiring Clos Windsbuhl, we decided to plant Auxerrois and Chardonnay in the coolest part of the clos, closest to the forest. These two grape varieties were always blended together, but in 2001 we were forced to release the wine as Zind “Vin de France” because the Chardonnay grape is not permitted in the AOC Alsace wine (only Cr\u00e9mant d’Alsace). The shell-limestone soils of Clos Windsbuhl always give this wine a fantastic structure and amazing longevity for those with enough patience. The Zind was fermented in traditional large wooden barrels and remained on the full lees until bottling. <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

The 2022 Zind has an intense aroma, with mango, lime, orange, ginger, and ripe apple, accompanied by a subtle tobacco note. Upon contact with oxygen, a beguiling chalky note emerges, along with a percussion aroma similar to that of great Burgundy wines in their youth. Elegance, tension, and depth are already omnipresent on the nose. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

On the tongue, it appears polished, taut, and beguiling alongside the pronounced citrus fruit, with an extremely invigorating acidity and a deep, stony minerality that grips and completely captivates the taster. The long, intensely salty finish and the fine tannins point to its fantastic aging potential. The perfect accompaniment to classic French cuisine and Asian-inspired umami dishes. A real alternative to the expensive wines from Burgundy, what a delight, what a true insider tip from my beloved Alsace. Be sure to decant and enjoy it from a larger glass, not too cold.<\/p>\n

From 33-year-old vines planted in the coolest part of the Clos Windsbuhl, which is located adjacent to the forest, the 2022 Chardonnay-Auxerrois Zind offers a deep, clear, fresh and elegantly aromatic nose of ripe and well-concentrated fruits, Muschelkalk limestone, herbs, salts and lemon juice. On the palate, this is a mouth-filling, refined and stimulating mineral white with a dense and even rich texture and a long, intense and complex structured finish with fine tannins and stimulating salinity. The wine is as rich and powerful as it is stimulatingly juicy and elegant, provided with fine tannins that are perfectly wrapped by the concentrated and generous fruit texture. This is a great Windsbuhl, yet since it’s also Chardonnay without bubbles, it has to be marketed as Vin de France. The 2022 will improve greatly with time, although it’s already irresistible. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in November 2024.

The 2022 Zind is a blend of two-thirds Chardonnay and one-third Auxerrois from the Triassic limestone soils in the Clos Windsbuhl. The nose shines with fresh, ripe, juicy yellow apple fringed with lovely zestiness. This is light-bodied, sunny, medium-bodied, fruity and fresh, with Chardonnay’s added textural pleasure. (Bone-Dry)
