Wine Information<\/h5>\n

Olivier Humbrecht: The Zind-Humbrecht winery produces only a single red wine, on a very small 0.32-hectare plot in the Heimbourg single vineyard in Turckheim. This west-facing Pinot Noir ripens slowly on red Oligocene limestone soil (rich in iron) and develops a fine aromatic profile. Due to the high planting density (10,000 vines\/ha) and pruning close to the ground, the grapes are very small and grow almost at ground level. <\/p>\n

Vineyard Information<\/h5>\n

Yields have always been low, but in recent years this vineyard has been particularly susceptible to trunk diseases. The grapes are harvested in small 15 kg containers and then destemmed by hand on a perforated wooden board. Fermentation begins in an open vat with minimal pigeage (submersion of the pomace cap). The wine is transferred to 228 and 350 liter barrels (not new) and bottled directly without filtration or fining. <\/p>\n

Colour<\/h5>\n

Muted garnet red with lightening towards the rim. <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

The 2020 Pinot Noir Heimbourg is mineral, earthy, and still somewhat restrained in its fruit, which, with sufficient oxygen, reveals dark cherries, plums, and berries. An extremely fresh and captivating Pinot Noir, full of expression and finesse, which, with sufficient aeration, reveals plenty of minerality and depth. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

Its palate is extremely elegant, with acidity and tannins still youthful yet ripe. Its juicy fruit beautifully stimulates the drink; once again, one clearly senses the Burgundy affinity, which Olivier has brilliantly brought out. A wonderfully expressive wine that unfolds perfectly in combination with dishes featuring earthy and fruity components. Excellent development potential! Sufficient aeration will allow this exceptionally fine wine to further enhance its character.<\/p>\n

From 25-year-old vines planted in high density of 10,000 vines per hectare, the 2020 Heimbourg Turckheim Pinot Noir opens with a bright, charmingly intense, fragrant floral and spicy nose of ripe cherries, red and black currants, dark chocolate shavings, cigars and a saline layer of finely weathered limestone rock. The 2020 remains very charming and playful on the palate that is lush, round and well balanced by fine, smooth and silky tannins. It develops an intense and persistently aromatic finish without weighing in with power, richness and too much concentration. It is a delicately extracted Pinot with juicy fruit, tickling tannins and remarkably fine and ripe acidity. This is an irresistible, almost caressing Pinot Noir with lots of charm, even if it’s less tight and concentrated than the young and promising 2022. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in November 2024.
