Wine Information<\/h5>\n

Clos Windsbuhl is located above the village of Hunawihr, on a very interesting limestone geology often found in many of the area’s top vineyards. Muschelkalk is a calcareous rock from the Triassic period, containing many shellfish and rich in magnesium. It is often referred to as “dolomitic” limestone. The topsoil is thin, and the vines grow quickly on the poor parent rock. Limestone soils tend to be cooler, but not in this location. The slope and orientation of the vineyard provide enough warmth for the soil to warm sufficiently for this grape variety, which needs it. <\/p>\n

Vine Information<\/h5>\n

However, because Windsbuhl is located at a higher elevation and close to the forest, there is a natural cooler influence on all the wines. The Gewurztraminer ripens very well, but slowly, and remains very elegant with a naturally higher acidity. The 2019 vintage fermented slowly and retained some sweetness. It could be described as a moelleux. <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

The 2019 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl displays sweet plums, pears, juicy pineapple, and orange jam, while appearing cool and chalky. It possesses great elegance and mineral depth, which is best revealed after decanting. With contact with oxygen, subtle aromas of coriander, dried ginger, and anise emerge. All very subtly interwoven, never intrusive. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

It practically dances on the palate; the cool notes combine with a very precise acidity, immense freshness, and plenty of vibrancy. Its subtle sweetness gradually fades into the background, but it lends it a certain charm. The fine pear and pineapple fruit predominates on the tongue. Salty precision and a sweet-sour, aromatic firework. A true long-distance runner, already a great drinker now and one that will prove even better in a few years. A paragon of elegance, pure umami! Those impatient to open it now are advised to decant it at least a day in advance and enjoy it not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.<\/p>\n

From 49-year-old vines on the calcareous Muschelkalk terroir far above the village of Hunawihr, the 2019 Clos Windsbuhl Hunawihr Gewurztraminer is deep, intense and aromatic on the initially moderately fruity and rather spicy nose that becomes super aromatic and fruit-intense after aeration and intermingles chalky terroir aromas with tropical fruit aromas reminiscent of pineapples, mangoes and lush melons. Rich but elegant and refined on the palate and provided with a certain freshness that also becomes more obvious with aeration, this is a pretty sweet yet tight and finely tannic, not really dry but tending toward dry-finishing Gew\u00fcrztraminer “moelleux” that is reserved, even snappy, if poured straight from the bottle, yet it’s just far too young, though it has promising talents if aerated for a day or two. 13.1% alcohol including 35.6 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted in November 2024.
