Information about the Wine<\/h5>\n

The Clos de B\u00e9ru vineyard is the house’s monopoly site. The only reason the Clos de B\u00e9ru is not classified as a Premier Cru in Chablis is because it was leased after the untimely death of Comte \u00c9ric de B\u00e9ru, and the family showed no interest in classification. Historically, the Clos de B\u00e9ru has always been considered on a par with good Premier Cru sites. Standing in the vineyard, it’s immediately clear why: pure, south-facing, not very steep, but certainly sloping and very stony, typical Kimmeridge soil. The boundaries were originally drawn by monks along the terroir. This is why the Clos is not rectangular, but rather that of a slanted trapezoid. After a spontaneous and long fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in tonneaux, then a year in foudres and six months in the bottle to tame the intensity of this powerful, mineral, and complex wine. It was bottled unfiltered, unfined, and with only minimal use of sulfur. <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

No matter how enthusiastic one may be about B\u00e9ru’s three other single-vineyard Chablis, the Clos de B\u00e9ru always manages to increase the enthusiasm even further. The nose is simply spectacular in its finesse and density. It is a fantastic blend of green, yellow, orange, and even red facets, ranging from mirabelle plums, limes, and gooseberries to Cedrat lemons, bergamots, tangerines, oranges, apricots, and quinces, as well as a few red currants. And that’s just the fruit aspect. Of course, there are also herbs like mint and green almonds, as well as crushed lime, iodine, smoke, and enveloping notes of brioche and lemon curd. Added to this is the very slight, typical B\u00e9ru oxidation, which lends a somewhat crumbly quality to the whole. This is fascinating, especially when you’ve poured the wine into a large carafe and watched it develop. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

From the very first moment, the palate is filled with Chablis with the perfect acidity structure. It’s present at the top of the palate and pairs with an elegant, yet electrifying minerality. Then it branches out into the complex fruitiness, remaining present and somehow linear despite the branching. Then it stretches into a finish that seems almost endless. And a lot happens along the way: There’s the ripeness of apricots, peaches, quinces, and kumquats; there’s the creaminess from the long lees aging; there’s the tautness of limes, lemons, and grapefruit with the tangy zest of the peel; there’s the mouthwatering salt; there’s that subtle hint of white pepper and the iodine of oyster water. All of this is permeated by the acidity and brought together into a whole. Is that too effusive a eulogy for the Clos de B\u00e9ru? It’s simply an inspiring Chablis\u2014without a Cru classification, but definitely at Grand Cru level.<\/p>\n

The 2019 Chablis Clos B\u00e9ru, which undergoes an additional year in barrel (demi-muids), is a three-hectare monopole belonging to the domaine, the mother rock close to the surface. It has a very complex bouquet with apricot blossom, clementine, hints of peach and crushed stone. The palate is well balanced with fine tension on the entry, a superb bead of acidity, lightly spiced with touches of ginger towards the finish. Lots of energy here – you can feel the terroir expressed on the finish. Excellent.
