Among the many wineries that have become known far beyond Rioja since the 1980s, Bodegas y Vi\u00f1edos Artadi occupy a special position. Artadi is among the region’s top wineries, producing wines that have come from purely organic vineyards, now also biodynamically cultivated, since the 1980s. In 1985, several families joined together to form a cooperative, but they disagreed, so two of the families, Lacalle and Laorden, took over the winery. The re-establishment in 1992 marked the beginning of Artadi’s consistent rise. This also included leaving the Rioja Winegrowers’ Association, which is why the term “Rioja” is no longer found on wine labels. Artadi is one of the region’s best wineries, cultivating a more modern style. This is also due to the fact that it owns some of the best sites in Rioja, with vineyards like El Pis\u00f3n and others.<\/p>\n

The bottled 2022 San L\u00e1zaro delivers all that the unbottled sample last year promised (and more!). There’s always an ethereal character here, an elegance and stony, chalky minerality that I like very much. It’s not a shy wine at 14.6% alcohol, with a pH of 3.59 and 4.89 grams of acidity, and it’s medium-bodied and elegant, with lots of finesse and very chalky and fine tannins. This vineyard has shallow soils, similar to El Pis\u00f3n but with more sand. It’s a strong contender for best wine after El Pis\u00f3n. They filled 4,000 bottles in June 2024.

The 2022 San L\u00e1zaro was sourced from a sandy amphitheater. Purple in hue, it opens with expressive notes of plum and cherry\u2014both fresh and ripe\u2014alongside hints of lavender and orange peel. On the palate, it\u2019s leaner than other bottlings, but offers flavor, texture and gentle grip. This is a more front-loaded expression than other years, with fine tannins and a clean, well-defined profile.
