Wine Information<\/h5>\n

The Terroir Sense Fronteres winery classifies its wines according to the Burgundian model, with the red wine Marcenca taking the place of Premier Cru. The Garnacha grapes come from the Els Montalts vineyard in the Catalan Montsant wine-growing region. The vineyard has clay and gypsum soils and is located at an altitude of 800 meters\u2014winegrowing doesn’t go much higher in Montsant. The biodynamically farmed vines are around 50 years old. Winemaker Dominik Huber and winemaker Tatjana Peceric ferment the grapes with the stems and rely on gentle extraction. The wine is aged exclusively in concrete tanks. <\/p>\n

The 2022 vintage will only unfold its full beauty with time. The Marcenca is not a wine that seeks to make a big impression quickly. The nose is floral and mineral, but also very purist and elegantly restrained. After some time in the air, the bouquet’s super-elegant and complex nature becomes apparent. As the saying goes: Still waters run deep. This is a wine that rests within itself. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

On the palate, too, this wine appears as clear and pure as a mountain stream. Nothing distracts from the essentials here; the Marcenca is a wine without any makeup. It is fascinating to see and taste how much complexity, personality, and depth lies within this simplicity. The 2022 vintage features elegant, fine tannins, a silky, almost waxy texture, and a long, spicy finish. With its freshness, spice, and finesse, this lean red wine is typical of the Garnacha grape variety and the so-called “New Wave of Spanish Garnacha.” On the other hand, it’s completely unique. That must be due to the terroir.<\/p>\n

The 2022 Marcenca de Montsant comes from the same vineyard as the grapes used for the Guix Vermell wine, pure Garnacha at 800 meters on stony clay and gypsum soils. It had a much lighter extraction and matured in concrete for six months. It has a moderate 12.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.7. This vineyard was picked earlier; it’s a part of the vineyard that they harvest with the grapes fully ripe but with moderate alcohol. The difference here is that the vinification is very soft, softer than in Guix Vermell, which is a part of the vineyard that is harvested later and has a more intense vinification. The aim here is to produce something closer to a clarete than a more traditional red. It takes some time to open up in the glass to reveal beautiful, high-pitched notes of wild berries and herbs, violets, something ethereal and very elegant. It’s pale and elegant, with very fine tannins and a velvety sensation in the palate. 1,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2023.

The 2022 Marcenca is 100% Garnatxa Negra from Montsant, aged for up to six months in concrete vats. Garnet in hue, it offers reductive herbal aromas alongside strawberry and floral notes. Lean and light on the palate, it delivers an energetic yet refreshing mouthfeel with a primary, flavorful finish. With a light complexion and a low alcohol content of 12%, this stylized Garnatxa stands in contrast to the typical regional wine style.
