The Gro\u00dfe Lage Pettenthal is certainly the most dramatic location on the Roter Hang, according to Kai Sch\u00e4tzel. The steep slopes are characterized by striking red slate. The narrow rows of vines, which shade themselves, can only be cultivated with great manual labour and effort. <\/p>\n

Fermented spontaneously in large wooden barrels and bottled on the full lees after several months. <\/p>\n

Intense golden yellow, cloudy, with delicate green reflections. <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

The 2020 Niersteiner Pettenthal Riesling VDP.Erste Lage appears somewhat closed under a carpet of yeast and plenty of minerality, so definitely pour it into a decanter so it can unfold its complex beauty. With sufficient oxygen, it is spicy, bacony, and full of intensity, with the fruit of quince and apple peel, apricot, orange, and vineyard peach still in the background. Kai has created a true diamond in the rough. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

On the palate, you can practically bite into it; grippy, with tart, citrus fruit and fine tannins, it opens up to an extremely complex wine that has tremendous aging potential and will only fully reveal itself with further maturation. Fullness and power paired with depth and elegance and a pleasingly low alcohol content of 11.5% vol. If you want to enjoy it now, be sure to decant it and drink it from a large Burgundy glass, not too cold. With further maturation, a wonderful firework display full of elegance and intensity will ignite, especially when combined with the right cuisine.<\/p>\n

No sulfur, no filtration and aged on the full lees for nearly two years, the intensely yellow-colored 2020 Pettenthal Riesling GG shows a deep and generous, very elegant and refined bouquet with iodine and flinty notes. Round and refined on the palate, this is a very elegant, lush and saline Riesling with fine tannins, crystalline acidity and a long, intense and tightly structured finish. The wine is beautifully round, refined and elegant and reveals a lifetime of finesse and mineral, grip. This is simply a gorgeous wine. 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022.
