Since 1996, the winery has been run by Steffen Christmann, the 7th generation. In 2004, the Christmanns definitively committed to biodynamic cultivation. The goal is to produce wines that reflect the vineyard, taste like it, and could not be produced anywhere else in the world. The harmony of vine, vineyard, and winemaker produces magnificent wines of great individuality. The ideal conditions in the Palatinate’s traditional Mittelhaardt region\u2014warm enough for full-bodied wines and cool enough for elegance and a fine minerality\u2014form the foundation. The Erste Lagen Idig, Mandelgarten, and Reiterpfad vineyards, in particular, produce Grand Crus that are consistently ranked among Germany’s finest.<\/p>\n

From vines planted in 1982 on red sandstone soils, the 2021 Sp\u00e4tburgunder Mussbacher Eselshaut VDP.Erste Lage\u00ae opens with a pure, deep and dark, soulful nose of dark cherries and some toasty as well as iodine notes. Medium-bodied, this is an elegant and fruity Sp\u00e4tburgunder with fine tannins yet a certain astringency and oaky bitterness and a tart but aromatic finish. 13% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in December 2023.
