Product description for Roagna Barolo Chinato NV <\/p>\n

Azienda I Paglieri is somewhat hidden in the lower part of the village of Barbaresco. Today, the young and extremely personable Luca, the fourth generation of the family, steers the fortunes of the house, always in close collaboration with his father, Alfredo. Sustainable practices are used in the vineyards. Vinification and aging of the wines are carried out in a very traditional way, aging them for extended periods in large wooden barrels. Barriques have never been an issue for the family, and never will be. For Luca, it’s a given to release his great wines only when they have reached initial drinking maturity, not when the market demands them. This explains the fantastic balance between the elegant tannin structure, the firm acidity, and the fine, ripe fruit.<\/p>\n

The estate’s NV Barolo Chinato is a winner. Roagna told me he spent several years researching the right combination of aromatic herbs, and that work has paid off handsomely as this is a gorgeous, serious Chinato. The base wine is a 10-year old Barolo Riserva, which gives the Chinato an unsually soft-textured, generous personality. All of the typical notes of sweet herbs, cinnamon, cardamom, flowers, anise and baking spices are layered into a sweet, expansive expression of fruit. This is a Chinato that is much more wine-like than digestif-like. It is a great effort.
