The sweet yeast of the still-young Sgarzon is also evident on the palate. Partly red, but primarily dark and silky fruit blends in. The texture is also silky, reminiscent of a burnt clay layer, so typical of Tinaja aging. Everything appears clear, pure, refined, and juicy with lively acidity and a truly sparkling minerality. The fruit darkens progressively in the finish, but remains crisp and fresh, accompanied by bitter tobacco, which was also present in the aroma. <\/p>\n

Information<\/h5>\n

Teroldego from the Sgarzon vineyard (Trentino dialect for vine) in Campo Rotaliano near Mezzolombardo, grown on 2.5 hectares of alluvial floodplain about one kilometer from the Morei vineyard, which is located near the Foradori winery. There is a lot of sand in the topsoil, and the plot is open and barely protected from cold winds. The grapes ripen about a week later than in the Morei. The wine was aged on the skins for eight months in tinajas, Spanish 420-liter cellar amphorae. In spring 2020, the wine was racked into concrete tanks to allow it to harmonize over the summer. <\/p>\n

From the brothers Morei and Sgarzon, the Sgarzon is always the somewhat lighter, wilder, and cooler wine, which is no surprise given that it comes from a cooler site. In the 2019 vintage, the Sgarzon displays a wonderfully stimulating, elegant, and captivating aroma. Elderberries and sloes play a role here, along with sour cherries and violet blossoms, pale tobacco, mint, and dry undergrowth. Added to this is a delicate scent of sweet yeast. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

The 2019 Teroldego Sgarzon takes its time opening in the glass, but it is worth the wait, as crushed ashen stones, black currants and exotic savory spices form its bouquet. As dark and brooding as it is aromatically, this is surprisingly energetic but also potent on the palate. A mix of zesty acids and tart wild berry fruits collide, creating tension and contrasts. Sweet tannins and minerals grip the senses through the long and dramatic finale, promising years of development. The 2019 Sgarzon is intense yet also playful. I can\u2019t wait to revisit this vintage in a few years\u2019 time.
