Domaine Rougeot P\u00e8re & Fils from Meursault was founded by Henri Rougeot and boasts nearly 13 hectares in prime locations in Meursault, Month\u00e9lie, St. Romain, Pommard, and Volnay. It is now run by Pierre-Henri and his father, Marc, in the fourth generation. The two took their first steps toward organic farming in 2012, and they applied for conversion in 2017. The domaine has been fully certified organic since 2020 and is in the process of converting to biodynamics with the 2021 vintage. The Premier Cru Volnay Santenots vineyard lies entirely within the municipality of Meursault, but is still considered part of Volnay, as Meursault is a pure white wine municipality. This plot in “Les Santenots” is located in the lower part of the village near Volnay. It lies almost exactly in the middle of Santenots-Dessous and consists of two plots with 60 and 40-year-old vines. The soil is rich with a high clay content. The grapes were macerated for 21 days with 90% whole bunches, daily pumping over, and racking once or twice during fermentation. This was followed by malolactic fermentation and subsequent aging in barriques with a new oak content of 35%. The wine was unfined, unfiltered, and filled without the addition of sulfur. <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

The 2018 Volnay Santenots Premier Cru Sans Sulphite from Domaine Rougeot P\u00e9re & Fils is powerful with enormous depth. Dark and smoky, it is reminiscent of undergrowth, long red pepper, smoked meat, light tobacco, and allspice. The equally dark fruit oscillates between preserved bay cherry and blackberry jelly with a dash of port wine. The constant aeration in the glass makes the nose appear like a three-dimensional kaleidoscope, its facets in constant flux. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

On the first sip, two facets also vie for dominance: The youthful, finely grained tannins act like sandpaper of the finest calibration, mouthwatering with an aromatically tart profile. The dark fruit, which shines brightly in rich ruby on the palate, holds its own. This interplay is fueled by the crystal-clear acidity that practically whips the wine across the palate. A great cinematic experience with a contemporary, rapid drinking flow and bright, clear cherries in the epic finish.<\/p>\n
