Roland Velich and his Moric winery have made winemaking history. It began in 2001 with the first vintage of the Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben Blaufr\u00e4nkisch. Since then, thanks in no small part to this wine, a Blaufr\u00e4nkisch style has been established, which is evident in the bottle shape. The name Moric stands for Blaufr\u00e4nkisch wines that stylistically lie somewhere between great Burgundies, Piedmontese, and Syrah from the Northern Rh\u00f4ne, yet are completely unique and possess equally great potential. The greatness of Velich’s wines, however, begins with the simple Blaufr\u00e4nkisch and with both the white and red house brands. These wines exemplify Velich’s claim that wines should be open-minded, inviting, fresh and juicy, complex and easy to drink. In addition to his own ideas, he also supports talented winemakers from neighboring Hungary with his Hidden Treasure Project.<\/p>\n

The 2021 Blaufr\u00e4nkisch Ried Kirchberg is from four parcels in this single west-facing site on limestone. The youngest parcel was planted in the 1980s, and the oldest was planted in 1921. Smoky peony petals, cold ash, blood and crushed wild blueberry on the nose have almost an ethereal quality. It has a firm, contoured, medium body that crunches with fine tannins of starched silk, offering density without weight and drawing the senses to an intrinsic core of bright, luminous freshness. Depth, brightness and aromatic layers unite and shine. The 2021 is serene, understated and immensely elegant. (Bone-dry)
