The Ottenberg Veitlhansl vineyard lies above the municipality of Ehrenhausen on a high plateau, approximately 330 m above sea level. The vines were exactly 26 years old at the time of harvest and grow on sand-lime brick with a layer of loamy clay. After spontaneous fermentation, the wine is aged slowly and with plenty of time for 24 months in neutral 500-liter barrels. The wine was bottled without any filtration. <\/p>\n

Clear, light straw yellow with greenish reflections. <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

An absolute purist stands before me. This Welschriesling Ottenberg Veitlhansl from 2020 appears pure, clear, and cool. A veil of cold smoke and abundant chalky nuances surround it, slightly enveloping the fruit. In any case, the fruit is rather timid. Only a faint hint of stone fruit precedes the still shy pome fruit. Mirabelle plum and white peach are clearly recognizable. A hint of juicy Nashi pear in the background. It is somewhat reminiscent of green papaya. Its herbal and ethereal nuances are much more evident. Nettle, coriander, and lemon balm deserve special mention among them. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

This interplay continues seamlessly on the palate. Clear as a mountain stream and taut as the current within it. This Welschriesling from Ehrenhausen in Styria shows a lot of edge. At the same time, it is juicy and extremely drinkable. Its slender appearance and tight fit suit it very, very well. The aromas emerge in line with the nose. However, it is still clearly characterized by bright flowers. The interplay of acidity and saltiness is magnificent. It is an absolute haven of tranquility. This is certainly also due to its very patient vinification and the long aging on the fine lees, which also results in a very subtle but very elegant aroma.<\/p>\n

From 26-year-old vines on loam topping chalky sandstone soils and aged in old 500-liter barrels, the 2020 Ried Ottenberg Veitlhansl Welschriesling opens with an intense and concentrated lemon aroma paired with herbal and grassy notes. Lean and fresh on the palate, this is a tight and phenolic Welchriesling. It’s a bone-dry and grippy, coolish, tonic and stimulating, fresh and even citric white with good tension, grip and length. A wine to be cellared for at least two or three years. 12% stated alcohol. Glass stopper. Tasted in May 2023.
