Information about the wine<\/h5>\n

The Gr\u00fcner Veltliner comes from the Steiner Schreck vineyard. The site is very steep, with vines planted on small terraces around four to five meters deep, characterized by Gf\u00f6ller gneiss and granite. The vines (the roots, not the vines) are 100 years old and are cultivated according to Demeter standards. They have a 2.4 meter high canopy. The harvest took place on September 4, 2019. This early harvest resulted in an alcohol content of only 11.5% vol. The Gr\u00fcner Veltliner was pressed extremely slowly over two days on a 100-ton tree press designed by the winery. The pressing process itself is completely reductive, but afterward the juice has time to brown, meaning it is deliberately exposed to oxidation. The juice fermented spontaneously and aged on the full lees for two years in 670cm oak barrels. After 30 months, the wine was bottled unfiltered in March 2022. During fermentation, Lang added 3 to 5% destemmed grapes, which ferment intercellularly (as in carbonic maceration), thus continually re-stimulating the fermentation process despite the constant 9\u00b0C in the cellar. Later, the wine was minimally sulfurized. <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

If time permits, Markus Lang’s wines should be left in the open bottle for at least as many hours as they spent months in the cellar. Then this Gr\u00fcner Veltliner, for example, develops into a wine with a creamy, herbal aroma reminiscent of lemon curd and salted lemons, green plums and a touch of celery, pepper and gravel with petrichor, a touch of flint and blond tobacco. It appears cool, intense, and clearly structured. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

On the palate, the Kalt und Klar appears generous and juicy, fresh, and tonic. It’s impressive how intense, powerful, and dense the wine is, even though it’s one of the lightest in terms of alcohol content. Yet nothing is lacking here. On the contrary, this is a charming, balanced wine: citrusy, bright, clear, with a hint of ripe pineapple, some wood, stone, and plenty of salt in the complex finish. If you don’t shy away from the comparison, then this is more of a Genevri\u00e8res, while the Third Act is more reminiscent of a Perri\u00e8res.<\/p>\n

The 2019 Riede Steiner Schreck Gr\u00fcner Veltliner Kalt und Klar has just been released after 30 months on the lees. Pressed in Markus Lang’s unique, self-constructed basket press for two days, fermented spontaneously in his rock tunnel and bottled unfiltered in March this year, the 2019 Kalt & Klar (Cold & Clear) opens with a deep, clear and intense, coolish, elegant and spicy bouquet of ripe, bright fruits intertwined with flinty nuances. Fresh and stimulating on the palate, this is a structured, persistently intense and salty Veltliner with vivacious acidity, fine tannins and a persistent, stimulating and crunchy finish. Given the 11.5% stated alcohol, you might think this wine is only light and fresh, but it’s more than that, most of all complex and stimulating. Natural cork. Tasted in June 2022.
