Wine Information<\/h5>\n

Olivier Humbrecht: The Grand Cru Hengst is located on the southeastern part of the Rotenberg in Wintzenheim. The geology of the red marly limestone has always produced (and still does) great Gew\u00fcrztraminer wines. Despite the warm and early microclimate, the Hengst takes some time to reach its sugar ripeness, as the marly soils require more solar energy to warm up. The iron-rich parent rock also favors good tannin ripeness, one of the reasons why the Hengst was recently awarded Grand Cru status for red wines. Recently, climate change has led to an increasing number of Riesling being planted in this Grand Cru. So when we decided to replace some Gew\u00fcrztraminer that had been planted on the cooler eastern part of Hengst, Riesling was a natural choice (Pinot Noir would have been too!). The small harvest in 2022 (some hail in June) and the slow and perfect ripening enabled the production of a superb dry Riesling. <\/p>\n

Nose<\/h5>\n

The 2022 Riesling Hengst reveals itself with pure vibrancy on the nose, fragrant flowers pairing with lemon, peach, green apple, and fresh ginger. At the same time, its juiciness and beautifully dense structure are hinted at. You want to immerse yourself in this abundance of fruit and exoticism. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

On the tongue, the stallion charges forward like a sinewy and powerful racehorse, practically exploding with juicy and exotic fruit accompanied by invigorating acidity. Its vibrant freshness and fine tannin structure give it a beautiful structure. Power without weight is the motto here; in a few years, it will reveal its full beauty. A few days of opening will allow it to develop its full potential. Excellent aging potential. Be sure to decant and enjoy from a larger glass, not too cold.<\/p>\n

From a cooler, higher part of the grand cru that is facing east-southeast on rocky, reddish soils, the 2022 Hengst Wintzenheim Riesling opens with a very deep and coolish, intense and complex yet refined and elegant, terroir-driven bouquet with fresh apple puree and spicy and saline terroir notes. Full-bodied, very elegant and not all too rich, this is a dense and well balanced, less racy Riesling than the Clos H\u00e4userer but with a long, intense and finely tannic finish. After 500 liters in the inaugural 2021 vintage, 3,200 bottles plus 170 magnums of the 2022 vintage were filled in January 2024. The vineyard was planted in 2016 with the winery’s own selections at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare, which yielded 28 hectoliters per hectare in 2022. 12.83% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.

The 2022 Riesling Grand Cru Hengst is picked on the eastern side of the Hengst. The parcel was planted in 2016 with high density, and the first vintage of the wine was the 2021. Gorgeously smoky flint precedes subtle floral and tangerine peel notes. The juiciness on the palate is all-encompassing, spreading wonderfully ripe, fresh Mirabelle fruit pervaded by fine, tangerine-like ripe citrus. The 2022 is serene, bright and sunny, with a long, zesty aftertaste. (Bone-Dry)
