Nose<\/h5>\n

The nose is incredibly deep and complex. Smoky accents are reminiscent of smoked bacon and Black Forest ham. A hint of rubber abrasion and old car tires brings with it the onset of ripeness. Dried fruit and nuts appear in enormous abundance. Plums, apricots, and peaches. Dates, raisins, and figs join them. Roasted almonds spread out alongside pecans and Brazil nuts. Salted caramel and popcorn add very exciting accents. A very faint hint of fresh apricots and mirabelle plums can be detected. Cinnamon and a touch of white pepper swirl around in the glass. Fruit bread and sourdough crust provide depth and honesty in the wine. <\/p>\n

Palate<\/h5>\n

On the palate, the 1988 Marsala Superiore Oro Riserva presents itself as incredibly balanced. It exudes absolute tranquility, is at a sensationally good stage, and is also characterized by a piquant acidity. The fruit appears only as a peripheral feature. It thrives on a lean, straightforward character, underpinned by a delicate melt. The Marsala appears straightforward and elegant. Full of finesse and with plenty of room for the delicate and diverse aromas. It seems almost salty on the palate. Fruit, sweetness, acidity, and bitterness are in wonderful harmony. This is complemented by the complete presence of the fifth taste sense: umami. Fabulous! The diverse aromas of the nose reappear in the aftertaste.<\/p>\n

The 1988 Marsala Superiore Oro Riserva is a dark amber color with orange hues. It opens with a spice-box bouquet that takes all the confections of Autumn and Christmas blended with dried apricots, peaches and cedar shavings. It\u2019s silky smooth yet lifted and decidedly savory, with a burst of ground ginger and sour citrus complicating its remnants of tart orchard fruit. Butterscotch comes together with clove and golden raisin as the 1988 finishes impossibly long and potent. It shows just a touch of forgivable heat as suggestions of hazelnut linger on and on. More like a brown spirit than a wine, the 1988 is irresistible.
