This complex interplay of aromas demands a first sip. Once you’ve tasted it, the pleasure of this wine becomes even greater. The Clos du Bourg Moelleux “Première Trie” may have the sweetest of the three “Première Trie” wines at 93 grams, but it also has the deepest minerality and the greatest depth. It’s a great wine, still developing, but already elegant and seductive, zesty in its citrus peel aromas, salty with notes of stone and a hint of botrytis, juicy in its multifaceted white and yellow-fleshed fruit of peaches, quinces, papayas, yellow plums, oranges, and melons.

Nose

Everything about this 1ère Trie displays sumptuous ripeness, depth, and complexity. The “Clos du Bourg” smells of a large basket of ripe stone fruits, freshly sliced mirabelle plums, apricots, and peaches, and the same again in candied and dried form. Added to this are honeydew melons, kumquats, and sultanas. A truly beguiling haze of butterscotch hangs over everything.

Palate

The 1ère Trie is undoubtedly a wine to put in the cellar now, with the first bottle perhaps opening in five years, and the last perhaps in fifty. And yet the Clos du Bourg makes it very difficult to put down after the first taste. It is already too juicy, the acidity of the 2015 vintage too perfect for one not to savour the greatness of this wine now. The Clos du Bourg is downright creamy on the tongue. The fruit of peach, quince, papaya, yellow plums, oranges, and melon is as concentrated as it is complex. The spices that play a role here practically demand a combination with Arabic or Asian cuisine, characterized by curry, saffron, coconut, and ginger. But classic French cuisine also has suitable answers to this great Chenin Blanc.
