Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, this 2018 vintage is another spectacular Syrah from the Ventoux, with an impressive balance of freshness and ripeness, robust yet ripe tannins, a wave of vibrant acidity, and that purple blackness that only Syrah has. It’s the blend of very dark fruit, coal, aged beef, violets, a little beetroot, olive tapenade, earth, and stone that comes together here—along with some light roasted notes of coffee. What a juicy and fleshy wine!

Wine Information

This Syrah is a place wine; unlike the 2017 Entrevon, which came from very sandy soils, this one is dominated by limestone and gravel, like the vineyards of Barroux. Harvested in September 2018, the Syrah was 75% destemmed and fermented over 20 days in a concrete cuvée, before being aged for 18 months in an enamel cuvée.

Colour

: dark, almost opaque violet.

Nose

This Syrah initially appears slightly reductive, with a hint of cracker aromas. But then it becomes pure Syrah: violets, pepper, raw meat, peat, and cold smoke meet blackberries, blackcurrants, and plums. They are ripe, but crisp and fresh, robust, and slightly cool.

Palate

On the palate, this 2018 vintage is another spectacular Syrah from the Ventoux, with an impressive balance of freshness and ripeness, robust yet ripe tannins, a wave of vibrant acidity, and that purple blackness unique to Syrah. It’s the blend of very dark fruit, charcoal, aged beef, violets, a little beetroot, olive tapenade, earth, and stone that comes together here—along with some light roasted notes of coffee.
