At the domaine, founded in 1919, Thomas Bouley has overseen an unstoppable rise to the top of the Volnay appellation since 2010. Meticulous vineyard management and his impressive feel for wood and tannins produce wines with power and substance, finesse, pure fruit, and rondeur. Bouley’s vineyards are located primarily around Volnay, but also in Pommard, Beaune, and Meursault. His main focus, however, is definitely Volnay, where he creates an impressive range, from the declassified Bourgogne Côte d’Or to the village wines and 1er Crus, which reflect the terroir with great precision and demonstrate the high quality and balance that can be achieved in this corner of Burgundy.

The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Carelle sous la Chapelle unwinds in the glass with generous aromas of ripe plums and berries mingled with licorice and spices. Medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, its rich, fleshy attack segues into an ample mid-palate, followed by a vibrant, mineral finish that reflects this sunny site’s shallow soils.
