Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru 2022 (bio)
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: The very steep hills of the Grand Cru Sommerberg vineyard are shaped like a series of crescents, facing south on biotite granite. The small parcel belonging to the estate is located in the Dudenstein sub-division within the Grand Cru. The Sommerberg, or Hill of Summer/Sun, enjoys sunny exposure. However, the village of Niedermorschwihr lies earlier in the shadow of the Vosges Mountains than Turckheim, so Sommerberg ripens slightly less early than Brand. The difference is only a few days but is consistent from vintage to vintage. Unfortunately, this vineyard was hit by a severe hailstorm in mid-August 2022, which mainly affected the west-facing grapes. After rigorous selection, as the hail caused early rot of the damaged berries, we finally harvested a small but beautiful crop. The long fermentation and aging on the full lees resulted in a very dry Riesling.
Colour
Intense, dense golden yellow.
Nose
The aroma of the 2022 Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg is juicy and exotic, with mango paired with orange, papaya, and sweet pineapple. With oxygen, notes of salty and sweet shortcrust pastry and light tobacco emerge. A wine, at the very beginning of its development, that holds great promise.
Palate
An exotic potpourri unfolds on the palate, with plenty of juicy fruit, fruity sweetness, and a crisp and delicate acidity that makes this wine seem incredibly lively. Its vibrancy makes it a wonderful match for food; Asian and Far Eastern dishes with a fresh structure and a slight spiciness are perfect accompaniments. If you want to enjoy it now, it’s best to decant it over several hours and serve it in a sufficiently large glass. A few days of opening will allow it to develop its full potential.

The 2022 Sommerberg Niedermorschwihr Riesling opens super aromatic, finely saline and slightly flinty on the nose that is reminiscent of a fruit salad in a granite bowl. Full-bodied and lush on the palate, this is a textural, very fine, round and juicy-elegant Riesling with rather smooth acidity yet fine bitters and tannins and a saline finish. Due to hail, only 27 hectoliters per hectare could be harvested. 12.8% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.

The August hailstorm hit the 2022 Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru, which meant 50% of the crop was lost and concentrated the rest. This is from a granite site with more topsoil. Gorgeous white and yellow peach are perfumed on the nose, just edged with peach skin and citrus. The palate is absolutely pristine, so clear-cut, bell-like in its purity. It just flows. Despite its relative mildness, the 2022 is precise, balanced, bone-dry and supremely juicy, with more lovely peach skin on the finish. (Bone-Dry)
